Junior hurling championship - Randals v Barryroe. - 2018-05-21 18:49:00

Rossmore was the venue for the first round junior championship match, Randal Og versus Barryroe, on Friday evening last, 18th May. Weather conditions, which were good, contributed to a hectic high scoring game.

After a slow start, the scores were level on the fifteen minute mark, Randals took a firm grip of the game and were eight points ahead at half time.

Scores came thick and fast, especially in the second half when they were almost at a rate of one a minute and more than that for some periods.

How the scores came.

Barryroe were first on the scoreboard, with points in the third and fourth minutes. A point from a free, the only one not from play during the game, was sent over by Eoin O'Donovan in the fifth minute, quickly followed by an equaliser, by Patrick Crowley.

A spectacular score, from Sam Kingston, put Randals into the lead for the first time. Two more Barryroe points followed.

Patrick Crowley made it level again, coming up to the end of the first quarter - 0-4 to 0-4.

Three points in three minutes, scored by Eoin O'Donovan, Donncha Collins and Johnny Collins gave Randals a lead which they never relinquished.

Barryroe came back for one on twenty minutes, promptly replied to by Johnny Collins.

The game then changed dramatically, with three goals in two minutes. The first was scored by Patrick Crowley, set up by Donncha Collins. Barryroe got the second, but Donncha Collins was back again to finish off the third a minute later.

Twenty three minutes gone.

Another score, from an impossible angle, by Conor O'Donovan, was followed by two more from Donncha Collins and Sam Kingston.

Barryroe got a point in stoppage time.

It was 2-11 to 1-6 at the break.

Randals increased the lead significantly in the first few minutes of the second half, Sam Kingston, Eoin O'Donovan and Patrick Crowley with three points in as many minutes, Conor O'Donovan getting his first of two goals and Sam Kingston adding another point. With  five minutes gone it was  3-15 to  1-6.

Barryroe were not quite finshed, and hit back with a goal on  six minutes and another two minutes later, Conor O'Donovan getting a point in between.

Points from Patrick Crowley and Seamus Crowley and another from Barryroe followed, eleven scores in ten minutes and the scoreboard showing  3-18 to 3 -7.

As the final quarter approached, Sam Kingston twice swapped points with Barryroe, before Conor O'Donovan finished off  a fourth goal, with seventeen minutes of half gone.

Randals were again dominant in the closing stages. Points came from Eoin O'Donovan, Johnny Collins, Donncha Collins, and Conor O'Donovan. two more from Eoin O'Donovan and the last word from Shane Patterson.

Barryroe got one back in between and got through for a fourth goal with time almost up. A penalty in stoppage time gave them the chance of a fifth goal, but Patrick Lynch, who had other ideas, brought off a brilliant save just before the final whistle
