Junior football championship - Randals v Newcestown - 2018-06-02 19:11:00

It was a fine Summer evening, the first day of June, as Randal Og and Newcestown lined out for a first round junior football championship game at Enniskeane.

It was a game of four differing quarters as far as scoring went, a game in the outcome which was in doubt right up to the final whistle.

Newcestown were first into the attack from the throw in, but they missed a few chances early on and it was Gerard Lynch who was first on the scorebaoard, with a point after five minutes. Seadhna Crowley added another from long range and Seamus Crowley put Randals three up, with about ten minutes gone.

Newcestown got their first score, a point after twelve minutes. but Eoin O'Sullivan responded to make it 0-4 to 0-1 with about a quarter hour gone.

The second quarter belonged to Newcestown. They scored five unanswered points during that period and came looking for goals too, but were unable to get past Denis Lynch.

So Newcestown had a 0-6 to 0-4 lead at half time.

Fortunes changed again on resumption, as Randals came back to take  control for most of the third quarter. An early point came from Brian Dullea and another from Seadhna Crowley and  scores were level again. There was a period of stalemate, with about ten scoreless minutes.  Eoin O'Sullivan put Randals ahead again, increased it two minutes later, and set up Seadhna Crowley for the first goal of the game.

This was quickly followed by goal number two, scored by Ian Crowley - 2-8 to 0-6.

Newcestown got their first score  of the second half, with about twenty minutes gone and they got another a minute later.

A crucial point was scored by Donncha Collins but Newcestown were back for two more and then, close to injury time, came a goal which left just two points between the sides.

An anxious time for the remaining minute or two, but that was the last score of the game and it was: Randal Og  2-9  Newcestown 1-10, at the final whistle.
